can't start squid with apache

i have apache 1.1.1 running in inetd port 80 [ w/o the proxy module ] and
i configured squid 1.0.12 for httpd-accel, and the config recommends port 80.
should i change the port which apache runs? by the way, what's the advantage
of turning on the httpd-accel?
