I think a construct like

    #if __STDC__ == 1

would be an adequate replacement for

    #ifdef _STRICT_ANSI_

since some compilers (e.g. SUN) define __STDC__ to 0 in compatibility
mode and to 1 in maximally conformant ANSI C mode.
