HTTP pre-1.0 support?

I have noticed that a HTTP/0.9 request (tipically a GET / without an HTTP/1.0 suffix) is refused by squid (1.1.beta3).
While this may be acceptable for a proxy, I think it is a problem when running as httpd accelerator since older browser will get an error for a perfectly legal request.
Am I missing something?
