cachemgr and slowness

Hi,
is anybody experiencing slowness when using the cache manager ?
Most of the times it takes even a minute or more
for a single cache_object request and the cache gets stuck and hangs for
the next minute !!! Anything else is ok and fast...
I'm using 1.1b23 but same thing happened with earlier versions.
We're using an IBM sp2 with AIX 3.2. Squid has an average of 17000
connections per hours.
