Squid uses memory to store the information about each object it has on disk.
This memory is over and above the cache_mem setting. The cache_mem setting
is simply how much memory to keep around for "hot objects" and currently
occuring transfers. If you have a 5GB cache you can expect to use at
least 40MB for keeping track of the objects, then add in the 8MB for the
cache. Another source of high memory usage is that the heap gets
fragmented and cannot return unused memory to the system.
