This works fine on our linux 2.0.30, squid 1.NOVM.10 machine with
similar hardware (libc version 5.4.17).

I last saw a problem something like this back in 1.0 days where squid wasn't
cutting down the length of the password field that you passed it
and would put all sorts of rubbish in the access.log or cache.log files
as far as I know this was sorted out, tho
