malloc on linux

Would anyone who knows about such things like to comment on the efficiency
(or otherwise) of malloc on linux.

Specifically would there be any win in using a different malloc with squid
on a Linux box (running 2.0.30 with a 5.3.12 libc - ie a Red Hat
distribution base).
