As for why an underscore is illegal in a hostname, this goes all the way
back to RFC-810, released in March of 1982 (yes, that's right, FIFTEEN
years ago), in which it states:

1. A "name" (Net, Host, Gateway, or Domain name) is a text string up to 24
   characters drawn from the alphabet (A-Z), digits (0-9), and the minus
   sign (-) and period (.). No blank or space characters are permitted as
   part of a name. No distinction is made between upper and lower case.

There's really no excuse for anyone to have an underscore in their domain
name. It's nice to see that the DNS server has finally started enforcing
this rule.
