Yes, but if you increase it beyond 1024, you stand a chance of crashing
any applications that were compiled before you made the change, because
FD_SETSIZE has changed.

Since the kernel writes back into the fd_set arrays, if it thinks they
are larger than they really are, you risk it corrupting a running
process' stack or free-store. Hence, you sould recompile any
network-aware apps (NFS is a biggie for this) if you change the
per-process fd limit beyond 1024.
