Mainly SCO is a pain in the ass when you need to install gcc. I have got the
compiler to work but only via one of the "Skunkware" installations (These
are SCO-installation kits more or less aproved by SCO) Just compiling the
GCC compiler using the SCO compliler didn't work to well for me.

You should be able to find the "skunkware-gcc" via the SCO-site (I think it
was in Skunkware 97)

But if you have the native SCO compiler installed you don't need the gcc.
Squid's configure wans you that its only guaranteed to compile with gcc it
compiled fine (just tested it to be sure with squid-1.1.18) with the SCO-cc.

This might be a way out for you...
