file descriptors

Hi,

Can someone give me a few pointers? Im running a squid server with 8Gig
cache on linux redhat 5.1 kernel 2.0.35 with the
filehandle.patch.linux.v8.01 patch. Every time squid starts up it still
says 256 file descriptors available in the cache.log file, Iv put ulimit
-n 512 in the rc.local file and its still the same. How do I do it.
