What exactly is the store_avg_object_size?

I recently got a message in my cache.log that said:
1998/11/07 15:53:49| WARNING: All 15752 swap files are in use.
1998/11/07 15:53:49| You should probably use a lower value for
1998/11/07 15:53:49| 'store_avg_object_size' in squid.conf
1998/11/07 15:53:49| WARNING: storeOpenSwapFileRead: bad swap_file_number
1998/11/07 15:53:49| Swapfile open failed
1998/11/07 15:53:50| WARNING: storeOpenSwapFileRead: bad swap_file_number
1998/11/07 15:53:50| Swapfile open failed
FATAL: file_write: bad FD

It was preceeded by a bunch of stuff like this:

/usr/local/squid/cache/0F/0E/000010EF: (2) No such file or directory
