This sounds very much like squid->client path MTU discovery. It does not
work when using transparent proxying, and the symptoms is that the
connection halts once a big packet is sent.

What you need to check is the MTU setting of the mac users dialup
connection. It needs to be no smaller than the MTU setting on the proxy
when using transparent proxying.

If your routers properly support fragmenting of "large" packets then you
can try to disable MTU discovery on the proxy. It should give a
performance gain for most communication except for large PUT/POST
requests. See your kernel documentation on how to disable path mtu
discovery.
