Actual value IP address?

I had a user report the following..

The number in the URL is the decimal representation of the IP address.
Squid thinks it's a DNS name and attempts to look it up, when it fails
it returns the error. He can access the site by going arround the cache,
and the Linux kernel can handle the format fine. Ping works. Is there a
workarround for this admitedly odd way of typing an IP address?

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: http://3490778837/jobs/
<http://3490778837/jobs/>
The following error was encountered:
        Unable to determine IP address from host name for 3490778837
The dnsserver returned:
        DNS Domain '3490778837' is invalid: Host not found
(authoritative).
This means that:
 The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
 Check if the address is correct.
