Very resolver libraries accept this as far as I know, and obviously this
did not. Some implementations of inet_aton accepts it but not all. Some
handle it differently than other.. (byte ordering bugs)

And, as Alex said: RFC 1738 (Uniform Resource Locator, Section 3.1 /
"host") specifies that the host part of a URL is either a fully
qualified host name, or quad dotted decimal IP representation. Anything
else is outside specifications, and may behave differently on different
systems/software.

And like most URL related issues this can be solved by using a
redirector or a PAC script. No need to add special cases to Squid for
handling a non-standard URL format rarely used for any legal / relevant
information.
