This is more or less it. Squid and all similar web proxies do one of
two things:

- gateway from HTTP with ftp: as the method;

- relay HTTP to HTTP with ftp: as the method.

In both cases, the client conversation is with HTTP of the form:

GET ftp://site/path HTTP/1.x
...

In particular, squid, CERN, etc. are not general firewall solutions,
they are proxies for HTTP clients.
