As per the FAQ:

under the heading "Solaris", add:

  set rlim_fd_max = 4096
  set rlim_fd_cur = 1024

to your "/etc/system" file and reboot the computer. For SunOS 5.5.1 with
Squid 2.1.PATCH2 I didn't need to do anything else mentioned in the FAQ (no
source changes, no Makefile changes) as everything required was picked up with
Squid was recompiled (as it needs to be after making the above change and
rebooting).
