You don't need to delete the cache directories. If you tune the filesystems
then they will, over time (a number of days) become less fragmented. If
you move the swap_logs (noting the warnings in my previous message) then
you can just rely on squid to truncate the cache filesystem size when it
needs to and you can, some time later, force it to try and use more space
just by reconfiguring it.

You gain nothing substantial from step (1) above unless you have you
swap logs on the cache filesystems, which (under Solaris at least) is
a bad idea.
