Squid acts like a whore's drawers

We've got Squid 2 running over two boxes... pat which does the web
proxying, and visa that does the cacheing, and has access to the
firewall.

Squid runs happily for any length of time - days, hours, minutes, and
then falls over for no reason. Restarting it often takes several
attempts before it settles down.

Visa's cache log includes entries like

I don;t pretend top know the first thing about squid, I'm a copntractor
here and its a complete bloody shambles.

Anybody any ideas?

FWIW visa and pat are Ultra-2 running 2.6.
