503 is not a "Gateway Timeout" response status. It is "Service
Unavailable". Both 500 and 503 are probably generated by origin servers so
you do not have to worry about them. To be sure, check your access logs.
See HTTP specs for details about these "errors".

*504* Gateway Timeout are probably denied attempts to fetch objects (that
are missing locally) from your siblings. See HTTP only-if-cached
cache-control option for more info. Recent versions of Squid will handle
those automagically by fetching the object from a parent or going direct.
Relatively small percentage of 504s is normal.
