Stat code snippets?

Does anybody have code snippets that would illustrate how to get the same
info that cachemgr.cgi gets? i.e. something really bone-head simple that
printf's a single stat to stdout? I can trace through cachemgr, but if
somebody has something that shows how it works already, it would save me
some time.

What I'm trying to do is create an lcdproc
(http://lcdproc.omnipotent.net/index.php3) page for squid, FWIW.
