refresh pattern & www.cache.com

hi all,

what is the meaning of refresh pattern syntax in squid.conf,

refresh_pattern .Z$ 604800 20% 2419200
refresh_pattern . 86400 20% 2419200

another question is every time i connected through any ftp sites and
download files from them, there are something showing up in the status
bar: connecting to host : www.cache.com .....

it happens everytime i connect through squid2.2STABLE3 but its not
happening in squid 1.22. so any explanation regarding this matter?
