Upgrade Squid 1.1 -> 2.2 - should I? (was: cache directory size)

The advice to upgrade to version 2 appears quite frequently in this group.

I am running 1.NOVM.22 on Linux 2.0.36 patched for 8192 filehandles, and
it is rock solid. (That is, I never have to restart Squid, and reboot only
about once or twice a year for a kernel upgrade or hardware modification.)
This stability is really important for me, as I have too many things
competing for my attention already.

On the other hand, I read that the last stable version 2.2S4 still has
memory leaks, it should be restarted once a week, and it isn't recommended
to run it on a Linux 2.0 kernel with increased filehandles. I also see a
disquieting number of patches for it on Henrik Nordstrom's web page.

Is it really time for me to upgrade yet, or should I still wait for 2.2 to
stabilize a bit - 2.2S5 perhaps? If I do upgrade now, is there a recommended
set of patches to apply to 2.2S4? And do I have to upgrade my Linux kernel
too? (Something I'd very much like to avoid!)
