I cannot say I can repeat this.

I did
  gzcat squid-2.2.STABLE5-src.tar.gz | tar xf -
  cd squid-2.2.STABLE5
  patch -p1 -s <../squid-2.2.STABLE5.age.patch
  ./configure
  make

Note: You shouldn't get any output from the patch program. If you do
then the patch file is most likely not correcly downloaded.

None as far as I know.

If you uncomress with gunzip, then will it be easier to read.

The snapshot is one large patch with all my patches + some more. The
snapshot also starts with a detailed changelog describing what has been
changed and why.
