heirachy codes ?

Greetings,

Why does squid (2.3 stable 1 on OSF 4.0D) return hierachy code
        DIRECT (squid code TCP_MISS) when I generate a HTTP 504 ?

I have a simple Linux box using ip chains to block access to port 80
(packets are dropped). I asked squid to get the home page from this
machine, it did as expected and timed out (hence the http code 504 I
guess). Now after it timed out, it puts in the log that it went direct
(TCP_MISS:DIRECT) I find this confusing. The FAQ says that
hierachy code NONE is returned for TCP errors. Is a TCP connection
timeout considered not a TCP error? Why is it considered to be DIRECT?

Thanks very much!

K.
