Did you stop Squid first? (I should have made that the first step in
my comments below, but I thought it was obvious.)

1. How did you do the deletion? Like this?

    rm -fR /var/spool/squid/*

2. Any interesting entries in the system log after the system hung up
during the deletion of the Squid cache?
