Squid Hangs

I have a weird problem with squid. I runs fine for a while and will then
hang for no apparent reason. I have looked in the cache.log and access.log
and don't see any errors that stick out. There are also no errors in the
syslog or messages file.
The resources on the box seem to be ok, plenty of disk, memory, and cpu.
This is running on a P2300 with 384MB of memory. Running Linux 6.2 and squid
2.3 STABLE2

When Squid hangs it doesn't log anything, and the squid process starts
eating up all the cpu cycles, and cpu idle goes to 0%. I do a ptrace on the
squid process and it doesn't return anything.

The only odd thing I see in the cache log is when I restart it shows my
cache dirty, but looks like it cleans it ok.
