Yeah I tried that - the problem is that when I specified
161.143.76.182/255.255.255.255
it didn't work when I configured the client browser (.76.182)to point to
the
interscan virus wall (which in turn points to the squid proxy).

Instead when using the line you suggest I am automatically
given an error web page, as if squid thinks I am coming from a
machine other than 161.143.76.182

I'm sorry if I didn't make this clear in the original post. Your help with
this problem is appreaciated and any further guidance you can
give me would be equally welcomed

You most likely want 161.143.76.182/255.255.255.255. The above will
match all of 161.143.0.0-161.143.255.255 due to the netmask masking away
16 bits..

Squid will get quite confused if you have multiple overlapping
specifications in one ACL definition.
