And this is where Squid fails. Cached objects are only partially updated
in memory, never on disk, and after a closer investigation it seem not
even the in-memory updated headers ever reaches the client in the
current code...

Squid seriously needs a major rewrite in it's response forwarding path
to clean this mess up.
