[SQU] named cache only

i'm trying to track down this problem:

without named running, my squid proxy works fine...
with named running in caching-only mode, not-so-much-squid-maybe but the
proxy slows considerable when downloading data and accessing sites...

any known reason(s) for this behaviour? rf.
