Are you using linux 2.4's ip_tables stuff, or the ipchains module? I had a
similar problem when deploying 2.4 on our large squid cluster here,
because I was upgrading from a 2.2 kernel. The ipchains module seems to
chew up _massive_ amounts of system resources.
