To be precise wrt the need for redirect programs:

The help of a redirector is required on "httpd_accel_host virtual". In
all other accelerator configurations one can get by without a redirector
simply by making sure Squid knows how to resolve the real server IP
addresses where the web sites/domains are hosted, not the official ones.
This is most easily achieved by using /etc/hosts (and compile with
--disable-internal-dns if using Squid-2.3 or Squid-2.4)
