[squid-users] please help

Hi all
this question is not directly squid related , but yet i need help from u
helpful folks
i m suddenly getting
bash: fork: Cannot allocate memory
free -m shows me total used free shared buffers
 cached
Mem: 505 501 3 10 319 10
-/+ buffers/cache: 171 333
Swap: 2000 0 2000

squid is only abt 117 MB
plenty of mem free yet this error .
linux redhat 6.2 kernel 2.2.19 512 MB ram
waiting for a reply from u guys before i get the machine booted , in case any
more info is required
