[squid-users] Squid and other protocols...

hi list...

over the past few months, i have seen more and more
questions regarding different protocols and
applications that are running on several of our squid
servers, especially if your squid server is your
gateway to the rest of the world... we have seen
questions regarding POP3, SMTP, IRC and the like..

i would like to mention that SQUID IS ONLY AN HTTP
APPLICATION..... other protocols that service
applications such as e-mail and chat software, have
very little or even nothing to do directly with
squid... these should mostly be concerned with your
system's firewall and masquerading techniques... squid
is simply another server running on your box, in
addition to your SMTP and POP3 server.... as for
protocols such as IRC.. the Linux 2.2 and 2.4 kernels
use IPChains and IPTables to transparently pass
packets for these applications, completely bypassing
squid....

i request that memebers on the list maintain questions
related to.. i have seen alot of space go to
answering the same question over and over... "squid is
an HTTP protocol, and not POP3" ... unless u use squid
to proxy your other protocols, which would be more
cumbersome, i suggest looking to other lists for
non-squid-related information...
