when you boot the box is in single user mode.
Meaning EVERYTHING gets done as root.
Its not worth your while worrying about getting round that.

When the box is live; why not just run it as root?
If its really not possible just set the sticky bit on it -- not wise.

chown root.wheel WHATEVER
chmod 4755 WHATEVER

That will cause it to run as root.wheel no matter who runs it.
read up on suid and sticky bits -- man chmod.
Its probably more of a risk doing that than it is running it as
root.
