Dave,

        this is how I start squid at startup.
        
        /usr/local/squid/bin/squid -s
        
        This is the error output in /var/log/messages
Feb 9 08:15:19 linux squid[2320]: Cannot open '/var/squid/logs/access.log' for writing. ^IThe parent directory must be writeable by the ^Iuser 'nobody', which is the cache_effective_user ^Iset in squid.conf.
