It is an automatic process. If it bounces the list sends out a test email.
If that fails it sends out a probe. If that fails the email is removed.

Subject: [squid-users] Unable to get help from
"squid-users-help@squid-cache.org"
I lost my old e-mail address due to @Home's bankruptcy. Now how can I
get that address removed from the Squid mailing list?
The automated unsubscribe requires a source address that is no longer
valid. I've written to "squid-users-help@squid-cache.org" asking that my
old address be removed, but got no response.
List maintainers, do your selves a favor: remove "swsnyder@home.com" from
the list and you'll reduce the number of bounced messages to deal with.
Thank you.
