 You should check the number of requests/sec your Squid has to deal
 with during normal operation.
 I am roughly serving 1500 clients using an avg. load of 30 req's/sec.
 which is rather mild concerning SQUID's capabilities.

 Also check :

 % dmesg

 and /var/log/messages on your system, check whether the kernel
 reports anything suspicous when SQUID is being used on the system.
