No more than those needed for a 10,000 user environment, with the usual
caveats of scaling up: pay special attention to fail-over scenarios in
your testing, and user expectation issues.

Squid for a long time (and may still) ran in one of the major peering
locations proxying a significant chunk of traffic. I'd estimate at least
100,000 end nodes for that box(en). However, thats not my box, so I
can't really comment.

Also, there was the JaNet cache farm, but I believe that has closed
down. It must have served a pretty big user base as well.
