For CONNECT (SSL) request yes.

For normal http:// traffic the number of connections may differ somewhat
depending on your user base and browser configurations as the
connections is then maintained separately between client<->squid and
squid<->servers

If you like. Technically it is not exacly address translation as proxies
operate at the application level on behalf of the client..

Or maybe it simply works better in your network environment when going
via the proxy than going direct..
