The HP-UX make program is broken and does not work with Squid-2.5 or
later.

Try using GNU make or mostly any other well known make program..

You can also try this little script after running configure:

#!/bin/sh
find . -name Makefile -print | while read makefile; do
   perl -i.bak -p -e 's/\\\n// if ! /^#/' $makefile
done
