Not in case of a bridge (won't be a bridge then)... but the bridge needs
to be inbetween the clients and their gateway..

Correct.

ip forwarding is not needed in bridge mode.. bridge forwarding is..

in addition the kernel needs to be compiled with birdge netfilter
integration, and the bridge firewalling module loaded.
