For Squid to make SSL requests you need Squid-3.0 or the SSL update for
Squid-2.5. With the SSL update for Squid-2.5 you also need a small
redirector helper to hint to Squid to use https instead of http. This is
not required for Squid-3.0.

Wrt tunneling of the SSL directly, why don't you make Apache SSL listen
directly on the external IP if this is what you desire? Tunneling does not
give you any additional protection like the proxying described above
does..
