Indeed it is a bad idea to kill redirectors under the feets of Squid, just
as it is a good idea to look into cache.log the first thing if one
experiences problems..

However, recent Squid-2.5 versions automatically recovers from the above
situation in addition to countless number of bugfixes, but a clean
reconfigure of the helper is obviously better either by "squid -k
reconfigure" restarting the helpers in a controlled manner, or by means
documented for the specific helper.
