Linux does detect it by a retransmission timeout, but the defaults are
quite long for a web server... You can tune these in /proc/sys/net/. See
the kernel documentation networking/ip-sysctl.txt for details on the
available parameters)

READ_AHEAD_GAP is already made a tuneable in Squid-3 for this exact
