[squid-users] yet another 104 connection reset problem

I have squid configured and (largely) working
correctly on linux using iptables for a transparent
proxy. Everything works ok for most sites except some
where they occasionally and inconsistenly return 104
connection reset by peer errors (amazon and imdb do
this almost reliably when doing searches but, as
already mentioned, it's not 100% consistent and
sometimes works exactly as you'd expect it to). I've
done some packet sniffing and the server is returning
an ACK followed by RST, which looks like squid is
returning the server's response correctly. What
doesn't make sense is that when the proxy is switched
out (at the iptables level - no redirect to the
proxy), the request looks identical (except it's
missing the proxy's additional payload in the request)
but the server isn't returning the RST and everything
works exactly as it should. Is the problem with the
outbound request being mangled at the proxy or beyond,
or the response being mishandled between the server
and the proxy, or is it something completely
different? Any pointers on where to go next with this
would be greatly appreciated.

Bill.
