Yes it can be argued that the app is broken since it won't accept
HTTP/1.0 replies (and I'll report this as a bug to the vendor).

What harm is there in my changing squid to report HTTP/1.1 instead of
1.0? It is either that, or look for another squidGuard compliant
transparent proxy.
