my squid too
USER PID %CPU %MEM VSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
squid 12673 4.4 41.5 1103404 1066856 ? Sl Oct12 52:14 (squid) -D -s

[root@california squid]# free -t
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2565608 2542024 23584 0 72568 867072
-/+ buffers/cache: 1602384 963224
Swap: 2096440 144 2096296
Total: 4662048 2542168 2119880

i think thats the size o cache_dir ...

i have 2 cache_dir, 25GB each..

and, squid use +- 20MB for each GB of cache_dir (64bit)

im using --enable-dlmalloc ... without this.. when squid reach
1200000 of VSZ .. its crash...
