Diskd has some usage cases which could cause crashes.
We thought about fixing them but then realised:

* the only OS where diskd makes more sense is FreeBSD
* and FreeBSD now has a sane thread model; so it can use AUFS

So the suggestion from us is "upgrade to the latest freebsd-6; apply
the patch that brett suggested and use aufs."

As I said to someone else a few weeks ago - we could fix diskd but it'd
require quite a bit of effort and there's other things higher on the
priority list for us to fix.

If you'd like diskd to be fixed then please let us know. But please realise
a lot of this work is stuff we're doing for fun now. Not a lot of us
are actually paid to work on Squid for any appreciable amount of time -
the only Squid developer I know who derives income from Squid is Henrik.
I do this stuff for fun.
