[squid-users] Cache-peer parenting and bandwidth management

Dear All,

I wanted to ask for your opinions regarding cache-peer parent and
siblings and their relation to conserve bandwidth.

I have a dozen freebsd proxy servers to handle our customers web
requests. Now they are just siblings to each other.

Now how much bandwidth can I save if I make one of the most powerful
proxy server the cache-peer parent of the rest of the servers.

Will I be able to save both uplink and downlink bandwidth if I go for
this setup? Also I have tried this configuration in the past but due to
some constraints, I could not further test my configurations.

But if you guys give me some help, tips and suggestions regarding this
matter, I would be very grateful.

The normal load on each of the proxy servers right now is approx.
40 request/second.

I believe that my most powerful proxy server can handle the load of
500 requests/second or even more.
 

Note: All my freebsd servers are running Squid-2.5 with the exception of
one which is using Squid-2.6.

Adrian, your configurations for /etc/loader.conf and /etc/sysctl.conf
are running well in one of my server running Squid-2.6. I will continue
to monitor it's status.
